Past and present. This website documents one of the first commercial vineyards in Saanich, which was planted in 1993 and produced wine from 2005-2016. Wine continues to be produced from Dragonfly Hill grapes each year.
Dragonfly Hill Vineyard is located alongside one of the original wagon trails through the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island, where the micro-climate lends itself well to grape-growing.
During the year of 1993 the rich soil of the land was worked and the vines were planted. Varietals grown at Dragonfly Hill are Ortega, Pinot Auxerrois, Shoenberger and Labelle.
A refreshing white wine made with Ortega and Pinot Auxxerois varietals that grow very well on the Saanich Peninsula. The crispness of cool rain, green apple and honeysuckle flowers expand across the palate to reveal a lovely mineral finish that lingers on the palate.
Dragonfly Hill classic: over ice
True to the traditional ‘Garagiste Movement’, we create limited-production wines using sustainable farming methods. At Dragonfly Hill Vineyard, we believe that cultivating exceptional wines is much more than an exacting science: It is a time-honored and evolutionary art.
The name Labelle comes from Dutch and French translations and to us means “Beautiful Dragonfly“, illustrating both the character of the vineyard and the classical simplicity of the wine it produces.
Dragonfly Hill Exclusive
from the SAANICH PENINSULA on VANCOUVER ISLAND
The Dragonfly Hill winery closed in 2016 but the grapes continue to be grown, nurtured, and harvested every season for wine-making purposes.
Rich mineral soils, natural spring water and lots of sun make the vineyard an ideal location for commercial grape production.
The crispness of cool rain, honeysuckle flowers and crisp apple are an expression of the vineyard, revealing a refreshing mineral like finish.
This collaboration of red grapes has artful notes of french oak, black cherry and distant vanilla. Aged in oak barrels before mixing.
The combination of Merlot and Labelle embodies smooth notes of french oak, berries, black cherry, distant vanilla and finishes with a rich complexity of flavour.
A blast of blackberry, raspberry, black currant, cherry, plum and kiwi with additional infusions of strawberry and rhubarb.
The grapes of Dragonfly Hill Vineyard continue to be harvested every year & produced into wine by Rathjen Cellars.
